Variety of low income and affordable apartments

With the current vacancy rate of San Diego being at 3.3%, the apartment owners can increase their monthly rent on vacant units with very little fear the apartment will stay on the market for too long. This is where affordable apartments can come into play where you can find housing for less than $1,000 per month.

San Diego also has an initiative to offer even more affordable housing to individuals and families in need. The San Diego housing commission (SDHC) helps families with lower income within the area find and secure housing. SDHC is a developer, lender and investor. Since 1981 they have provided San Diego residents with over 17,000 low income and affordable housing units.

For those on a very limited income, there are opportunities for single-room occupancy units (SRO). Essential what this means is San Diego has passed regulations that allow for certain qualified hotel units to stay as single-room occupancy units in the event SRO rooms are being demolished, converted or rehabilitated. This guarantees that at least some of the units remain available. From §143.0510 of the code.

“The purpose of these regulations is to ensure the retention of the existing number of SRO hotel rooms and to provide assistance to tenants of SRO hotel rooms that will be displaced by the demolition, conversion, or rehabilitation of existing SRO hotel rooms. These regulations are intended to benefit the general public by minimizing the adverse impact on the housing supply and on displaced persons, particularly those who are very low income, elderly, or disabled, resulting from the permanent or temporary loss.”
