Jobs Being Cut Across the Board

October 13, 2008 – 3:44 pm

Many companies are cutting jobs. Ebay recently let off 10% of its workforce, VC’s are telling their portfolio of companies to cut staff and conserve as much cash as possible.

Well, not here at Rent Marketer.

We are looking to hire in various positions for Rent Marketer and Apartment Marketer.

  3. I have been in the apartment industry a very long time (let’s just say going on 20 years). I have never heard of mass lay offs in the apartment industry until just recently. It is concerning me. I understand the practicality of Colonial laying off employees in the development division. Now is a tough time for developers just about every where in the U.S.

What trouble me most are the on-site layoffs. I have heard of both national and local companies cutting staff. I can only imagine what this is doing for employee morale. Productivity will suffer. Residents will suffer. Requiring an employee to do 1.5 jobs in the normal work week is a short term fix with long term repercussions.

In another case I have heard of two properties that let go of experienced (seasoned) managers to replace them with less expensive employees. What does this say about the value of apartment professionals who have dedicated their careers to our industry? Again a very reactionary position.

I wonder what other multifamily professionals are hearing and experiencing. Is this a trend? Is this simply the way business is moving as a normal mode of operation? I sincerely hope not.
