The Top Strangest Celebrity Homes
November 9, 2009 – 11:39 amEvery week we come across some of the strangest real estate news out there. This week, we’ve decided to highlight some of the craziest celebrity homes we’ve encountered.
Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch - Los Olivos, CA
Strange homes can’t be discussed without first mentioning Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. Since he first moved in 1988, Neverland Ranch began a transformation that turned the 2800 acre property into a dream world for children. Today the property is best known for the theme park complete with ferris wheel and a zoo. After Michael Jackson lost the property due to financial issues in 2007, the property has become an abandoned mystery. After Michael’s death this past summer, speculation on the property’s future became a hot topic. Hopeful fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting for property owners to turn Neverland into a museum. Only time will what happens to this strange home.
Barbi Benton’s Copper Palace – Aspen, CO

This property, originally developed by the former playboy playmate and her husband George Gradow, was designed by architect Bart Prince in 1989. The Gradow family wanted a home that was architecturally modern and provided views from every room in the house. Their wishes were met with the completion of a 5-pod, futuristic home they named “Copper Palace”. Barbi’s eccentric style doesn’t stop there. The interior decoration of the house equally reflects her unconventional taste; every inch displaying some work of art or some unconventional decoration. Staircases made of glass, disco-rooms filled with quartz crystal stalagmites, and custom furniture made to fit the awkwardly shaped rooms, can all be found in the outlandish home. As of 2009, the home belongs to new owners who paid $25 million, the asking price, and now the record for the most expensive home in Aspen.
John Travolta – Ocala, FL
With wealth comes the ability to turn a hobby into a lifestyle. No other celeb home proves this better than John Travolta’s Florida home complete with 7,500 foot airplane runway. The actor, a pilot in his spare time, needed his own mini-airport to house his two planes: a Gulfstream and a Boeing 707B. Luckily this property provided enough space for the airplanes and his family. The layout of the home allows Travolta’s wife, actress Kelly Preston, to watch the planes arriving and departing from the comfort of her own living room. Today, the home remains under the ownership of the Travolta family.
Bill Gates – Medina, WA

As the symbol for innovation and computer technology, this billionaire needs no introduction. However, his home is a whole other story. It’s safe to assume that as the most powerful man in the industry, Bill Gates’ home is going to have its share of high-tech knick knacks. Upon entry, visitors are given a microchip that adjusts the temperature and amenities of any room they enter to fit their comfort level. That is just how he accommodates his guests. The home is programmed to meet every amenity a human can ask for. From speakers that sound from behind wallpaper to a bathtub that can be run from his car, the technology in this home is unbeatable. Currently the property remains the home of Bill Gates. In addition, the billionaire has bought up several surrounding properties in an attempt to create a buffer.
