The House passed H.R. 2895, the “National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act of 2007″ by a vote of 264-148. This bill, introduced by Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) will create a national fund to be used for to produce, rehabilitate, and preserve affordable housing. Funds could also be used for homeownership assistance including down payment and closing costs. The Trust Fund would not require an annual appropriation. There is no companion bill in the Senate.
New California law could pass in other states
Governor Schwarzenegger recently signed a new bill into law that could be used by other states as a pattern for their own laws limiting the actions of owners, landlords and property managers throughout the nation. AB976 prohibits cities and counties from passing any laws that require property owners or their agents to make any inquiries, compile, disclose, or report any information about the immigration or citizenship status of a tenant, occupant, or prospective occupant of rental property.
The bill also prohibits a landlord or any agent of the landlord, from making any inquiry regarding or based on the immigration or citizenship status of a tenant, prospective tenant, occupant, or prospective occupant of residential rental property. Landlords and/or their agents are prohibited from requiring any tenant, prospective tenant, occupant, or prospective occupant of the rental property to make any statement, representation, or certification concerning his or her immigration or citizenship status.
